Horticulture is one the fast growing sectors in India gaining greater importance due to its export demand, sustainable income, nutritional security and generation of employment. Realizing the importance of Horticultural crops in Indian economy and of the state in particular, Under Graduate degree programme in Horticulture started in the year 1972-73 in Bangalore by UAS, Bangalore.
The College of Horticulture Mudigere established in the year 1991 and later transferred to University of Horticultural Sciences Bagalkot in the year 2009 and further came under the preview of the University of Agricultural and Horticultural Sciences Shimoga from the year 2013.
This premier horticultural education centre is oldest in Karnataka and it has a reputation of producing 760 professional horticultural graduates since inception. The College has been offering UG programme for more than two decades and M.Sc(Hort.) programme from 2010-11 in the disciplines of Plantation, Spices, Medicinal and Aromatic Crops, Fruit Science, Floriculture & Landscape Architecture and Horticulture Entomology. The PG programmes in Vegetable Science and Crop Improvement and Biotechnology programmes commenced from the academic year of 2013-14.
College of Horticulture, Mudigere has been contributing in a positive way to leverage the development of producing necessary knowledge, technologies, varieties and skilled human resources required for horticulture industries, institutions and promoting self farming by Horticulture graduates. Considering the quality education importing in this college, it was a Accreditated by ICAR in the year 2004 and subsequently UAHS has been striving hard to improve the quality education in both UG & PG programmes at Mudigere campus.
